This is the second artists’ book in the series I’m calling “Withdrawn/Archive.” (working title).

Field Notes (video, 2017) and Field Notes II (installation, 2016-2020) incorporate images from traced drawings of the whiteboards at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard during my Artist-in-Residence in 2016-2017.

Field Notes (video) juxtaposes the texts composed of conversation among scientists on top of the digital drawings based on her traced drawings of the whiteboards. While shedding light onto scientists’ genuine enthusiasm and joy it also shows frustrations for failures and glitches in the systems. It is composed as “a day in the life” of a scientist with a time stamp for the conversation I overheard.

This artists’ book was made using extra prints that were made for Field Notes II It was created in March, 2025.

From April 2016 to December 2017, Naoe Suzuki was the Artist-in-Residence at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, a biomedical research institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While she was at the Broad Institute, she traced scientific writings from the whiteboards by hand and created a number of works incorporating the traced scientific writings.
